Δύο δεκαετίες τώρα και το "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" συνεχίζει να αποτελεί πηγή έμπνευσης

Δύο δεκαετίες τώρα και το "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" συνεχίζει να αποτελεί πηγή έμπνευσης.

Πριν από δεκαεννέα (περίπου) χρόνια, κατά τη διάρκεια ενός Linux-Congress στη Βαβαρία, ένας αμερικανός προγραμματιστής ονόματι Eric Raymond  παρουσίασε την πρώτη έκδοση ενός κειμένου (working-paper) με τίτλο: "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" (μετάφραση: ο Καθεδρικός Ναός και το Παζάρι).

Σχεδόν δύο δεκαετίες μετά από εκείνη την απογευματινή παρουσίαση στη Βαβαρία και το " The Cathedral and the Bazaar" συνεχίζει να αποτελεί πηγή έμπνευσης.

What is Linux and Why There are 100’s of Linux Distributions?

What is Linux and Why There are 100’s of Linux Distributions?

When you are just starting with Linux, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
You probably know only Windows and now you want to use Linux because you read that Linux is better than Windows as it is more secure and you don’t have to buy a license to use Linux.
But then when you go about downloading and installing Linux, you learn that Linux is not a single entity. There are UbuntuFedoraLinux Mint, elementary and hundreds of such ‘Linux variants’. The trouble is that some of them look just like the other.
If that’s the case, why are there multiple of those Linux operating systems? And then you also learn that Linux is just a kernel not an operating system.

Too Many Linux Choices
Too Many Linux!
It gets messy. And you may feel like pulling out your hair. For a person who has a receding hairline, I would like you to keep your hair intact by explaining things in a way you could easily understand.
I am going to take an analogy and explain why Linux is just a kernel, why there are hundreds of Linux and why, despite looking similar, they are different.
The explanation here may not be considered good enough for an answer in an exam or interview but it should give you a better understanding of the topic.
Apology in advance!
My analogy may not be entirely correct from mechanical point of view as well. I am not knowledgeable about engines, cars and other related mechanical stuff.
But in my experience, I have noticed that this analogy helps people clearly understand the concept of Linux and operating system.
Also, I have used the term Linux OS instead of Linux distribution deliberately so that newcomers don’t start wondering about distribution.

Linux is just a kernel

Linux is not an operating system, it’s just a kernel.
The statement is entirely true. But how do you understand it. If you look into books, you’ll find Linux kernel structure described like this:
Linux Kernel Structure
There is absolutely correct, however, let’s take a different approach. Think of operating systems as vehicles, any kind of vehicle be it motorbikes, cars or trucks.
What is at the core of a vehicle? An engine.
Think of kernel as the engine. It’s an essential part of the vehicle and you cannot use a vehicle without the engine.
Operating System Analogy
But you cannot drive an engine, can you? You need a lot of other stuff to interact with the engine and drive the vehicle. You need wheels, steering, gears, clutch, brakes and more to drive a vehicle on top of that engine.
Similarly, you cannot use a kernel on its own. You need lots of tool to interact with the kernel and use the operating system. These stuff could be shell, commands, graphical interface (also called desktop environments) etc.
This makes sense, right? Now that you understand this analogy, let’s take it further so that you understand the rest of it.
Windows and other operating systems have kernel too
Kernel is not something exclusive to Linux. You may not have realized but Windows, macOS and other operating systems have a kernel underneath as well.
Microsoft Windows operating systems are based on Windows NT kernel. Apple’s macOS is based on the XNU kernel.

Think of operating systems as vehicles

Think of Microsoft as an automobile company that makes a general purpose car (Windows operating system) that is hugely popular and dominates the car market. They use their own patented engine that no one else can use. But these ‘Microsoft cars’ do not offer scope of customization. You cannot modify the engine on your own.
Now come to ‘Apple automobile’. They offer shiny looking, luxury cars at an expensive price. If you got a problem, they have a premium support system where they might just replace the car.
Now comes Linux. Remember, Linux is just an engine (kernel). But this ‘Linux engine’ is not patented and thus anyone is free to modify and build cars (desktop operating system), bikes (small embed system in your toys, tvs etc), trucks (servers) or jet-planes (supercomputers) on top of it. In real world, no such engine exists but accept it for the sake of this analogy.
Linux Kernel As Engine
  • kernel = engine
  • Linux kernel = specific type of engine
  • desktop operating systems = cars
  • server operating systems = heavy trucks
  • embed systems = motor-bikes
  • desktop environment = body of the vehicle along with interiors (dashboard and all)
  • themes and icons = paint job, rim job and other customization
  • applications = accessories you put for specific purpose (like music system)

Why there are so many Linux OS/distributions? Why some look similar?

Why there are so many cars? Because there are several vehicle manufacturers using the ‘Linux engine’ and each of them have so many cars of different type and for different purposes.
Since ‘Linux engine’ is free to use and modify, anyone can use it to build a vehicle on top of it.
This is why Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, SUSE, Manjaro and many other Linux-based operating systems (also called Linux distributions or Linux distros) exist.
You might also have noticed that these Linux operating systems offer different variants but they look similar. I mean look at Fedora’s default GNOME version and Debian’s GNOME version. They do look the same, don’t they?
Fedora Gnome Vs Debian Gnome
Fedora GNOME vs Debian GNOME: Virtually No Visual Difference
The component that gives the look and feel in a Linux OS is called desktop environment. In our analogy here, you can think of it as a combination of outer body and matching interiors. This is what provides the look and feel to your vehicle, does it not?

It’s from the exterior that you can identify the cars into category of sedan, SUV, hatchback, station wagon, convertible, minivan, van, compact car, 4×4 etc.
But these ‘type of cars’ are not exclusive to a single automobile company. Ford offers SUV, compact cars, vans etc and so do other companies like General Motors, Toyota.
Linux SUV Analogy
Vehicles of same type look similar even if they are from different automobile companies
Similarly, distributions (Linux OSes) like Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Manjaro etc also offer different variants in the form of GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon, MATE and other desktop environments.
Ford’s SUV may look similar to Toyota’s or Renault’s SUV. Fedora’s GNOME version may look similar to Manjaro or Debian’s GNOME version.

Some type of cars consume more fuel, some desktop environments need more RAM

You probably understand the ‘usefulness’ of different types of cars. Compact cars are good for driving in the cities, vans are good for long trip with family, 4×4 are good for adventures in jungles and other rough terrain. A SUV may look good and feel comfortable for sitting but it consumes more fuel than a compact car that might not be comfortable to sit in.
Similarly, desktop environments (GNOME, MATE, KDE, Xfce etc) also serve some purpose other than just providing the looks to your Linux operating system.
GNOME gives a modern looking desktop but it consumes more RAM and thus require that your computer has more than 4 GB of RAM. Xfce on the other hand may look old/vintage but it can run on systems with 1 GB of RAM.

Difference between getting desktop environment from distribution and installing on your own

As you start using Linux, you’ll also come across suggestions that you can easily install other desktop environments on your current system.
Remember that Linux is a free world. You are free to modify the engine, customize the looks on your own, if you have the knowledge/experience or if you are an enthusiastic learner.
Think of it as customizing cars. You may modify a Hundai i20 to look like Suzuki Swift Dzire. But it might not be the same as using a Swift Dzire.
When you are inside the i20 modified to look like Swiftz Dzire, you’ll find that it may not have the same experience from the inside. Dashboard is different, seats are different. You may also notice that the exterior doesn’t fit the same on i20’s body.
The same goes for switching desktop environments. You will find that you don’t have the same set of apps in Ubuntu that you should be getting in Mint Cinnamon. Few apps will look out of place. Not to mention that you may find a few things broken, such as network manager indicator missing etc.
Of course, you can put time, effort and skills to make Hundai i20 look as much like Swift Dzire as possible but you may feel like getting Suzuki Swift Dzire is a better idea in the first place.
This is the reason why installing Ubuntu MATE is better than installing Ubuntu (GNOME version) and then installing MATE desktop on it.

Linux operating systems also differ in the way they handle applications

Another major criteria on which the Linux operating systems differ from each other is the package management.
Package management is basically how you get new software and updates in your systems. It’s up to your Linux distribution/OS to provide the security and maintenance updates. Your Linux OS also provides the means of installing new software on your system.
Some Linux OS provides all the new software version immediately after their release while some take time to test them for your own good. Some Linux OS (like Ubuntu) provides easier way of installing a new software while you may find it complicated in some other Linux OS (like Gentoo).
Keeping the line of our analogy, consider installing software as adding accessories to your vehicle.
Suppose you have to install a music system in your car. You may have two options here. Your car is designed in such a way that you just insert the music player, you hear the click sound and you know it’s installed. The second option could be to get a screwdriver and then fix the music player on screws.
Most people would prefer the hassle-free click lock installing system. Some people might take matter (and screwdriver) into their own hands.
If an automobile company provides scope for installing lots of accessories in click-lock fashion in their cars, they will be preferred, won’t they?
This is why Linux distributions like Ubuntu have a more users because they have a huge collection of software that can be easily installed in matter of clicks.

Conclusion

Before I conclude this article, I’ll also like to talk about support that plays a significant role in choosing a Linux OS. For your car, you would like to have its official service center or other garages that service the automobile brand you own, don’t you? If the automobile company is popular, naturally, it will have more and more garages providing services.
The same goes for Linux as well. For a popular Linux OS like Ubuntu, you have some official forums to seek support and a good number of websites and forums providing troubleshooting tips to fix your problem.

Again, I know this is not a perfect analogy but this helps understand the things slightly better.
If you are absolutely new to Linux, did this article made things clear for you or you are more confused than before?
If you already know Linux, how would you explain Linux to someone from non-technical background?
Your suggestions and feedback is welcome.

Hacker HighSchool: Security awareness for teens

Στο "Hacker HighSchool: Security awareness for teens" θα βρείτε ότι θα χρειαστείτε για να το πετύχετε:

Root access for students at Penn Manor

Charlie Reisinger from the Penn Manor School District talked to us next about open source at his school. This talk was an expanded version of his lightning talk from the previous night.

Penn Manor has nine IT team members which is a very lean staff for 4500 devices. They also do a lot of their technology in house. But, before we talk about open source, Charlie took a tangent into the nature of education today. He says that school districts are so stuck on the model they’re using and have used for centuries, but today kids can learn anything they would like with a simple connection to the Internet. You can be connected to the most brilliant minds that you’d like, so teachers are no longer the fountains of all knowledge. A glaring gap in this evolution is that the classroom hasn’t been transformed by technology; if you walked into a classroom 60 years ago, it would look pretty much like a classroom today.

Schools that do allow students to have laptops, lock them down. This is a terrible model for student inquiry, and the reason most of us are here [working in open source] today is because we had a system growing up that we could get into and try to break, fix, and hack.
Doing everything with open source

So, what is Penn Manor doing differently? First, they’re doing everything with open source. They use Koha, Moodle, Linux, WordPress, Ubuntu, OwnCloud, SIPfoundry, and VirtualBox.

This came to them partially out of fiscal necessity. When Apple discontinued the white Macbook, the school was stuck in a situation where they needed to replace these laptops with some sort of affordable device. Using data they collected from the students laptops, they found that students spent most of their time on their laptops in the browser or in a Word Processor, so they decided to install Linux on laptops. Ubuntu was the choice because the state-level testing would work on that operating system. This worked at the elementary, but they needed to scale it up to the high schools, which was much harder because each course needed different/specific software. They needed to decide if they could provide a laptop for every student.

The real guiding force in deciding to provide one laptop per student was the English department. They said that they needed the best writing device that could be given to them. This knocked out the possibility of giving tablets to all students; instead a laptop was needed. Not only did they give all students laptops with Linux installed, they gave them all root access! This required trust! They created policies and told the students they trusted them to use the laptops as responsible learners.
Root access for students

Charlie has had zero discipline issues associated with the students having root access on their laptops.

And, if a student screws up their computer, it isn’t such a bad thing because now they have to learn to fix their mistake.

This began as a pilot program for 90 of their online students before deploying to all 1,700 students. These computers include not just productivity software, but Steam! That got the kids attention. When they deployed to everyone though, Steam had to come off the laptops—but the kids knew it was possible, so it forced them to figure out how to install it on Linux, which is not always self explanatory. This prodded the kids into learning.

Charlie mentions that he probably couldn’t have done this 5 years ago because the apps that are available today are so dense and so rich.

There was also the issue of training the staff on the change in software, but also in having all the kids with laptops. This included some training of the parents as well.

Along with the program they created a help desk program as a 4 credit, honors level course, as independent study for the high school students. They spent the whole time supporting the one to one program (one laptop per student). These students helped with the unpacking, inventorying, and the imaging (github.com/pennmanor/FLDT built by one of the students) of the laptops over 2 days.

The key to the program is that the students are treated as equals. Charlie’s favorite moment has been watching his students train their peers on how to use these laptops.

This article was originally posted on Nicole's blog What I Learned Today asATO2014: Lessons from Open Source Schoolhouse. Reposted via Creative Commons.

The program was covered on Linux.com and previously on Opensource.com.

Ωραία, εγκατέστησα Linux Mint MATE, και τώρα τι κάνω;

Εδώ που τα λέμε το MATE είναι πιο MS-Windows like από τα Windows 8 ;-).

10 things to do first in Linux Mint 17.1 Mate

Tips and Tricks after Mint's intallation (Παραμετροποιήσεις, αλλαγές, κλπ)

"Our long-term plan for a stronger economy is all about helping UK businesses grow. We have listened to those who told us that open standards will reduce their costs and make it easier to work with government" και συνεχίζει "This is a major step forward for our digital-by-default agenda which is helping save citizens, businesses and taxpayers £1.2 billion over this Parliament."

"Compliance with any of the existing versions of OOXML, the competing document format championed by Microsoft, is neither required nor relevant.

Άραγε τι θα κάνουν οι άλλες χώρες τις Ε.Ε; Εμείς;

Geneva class-rooms switching to free software

Submitted by Gijs Hillenius on July 20, 2014

All primary and secondary public schools in the Swiss Canton of Geneva are switching to using Ubuntu GNU/Linux for the PCs used by teachers and students. The switch has been completed by all of the 170 primary public schools, and the migration of the canton's 20 secondary schools is planned for the next school year. Ubuntu GNU/Linux offers powerful services to the teachers, is easier to maintain, faster, safer and more stable than the decade-old proprietary operating system it is replacing, the canton's school IT department concludes, based on several four-year long pilots.

Making it easier to service the canton's schools' PC needs was one the main reasons for 'Service écoles-médias' (SEM), part of Geneva's IT department, to switch the schools to Ubuntu, as the proprietary system is no longer being maintained. Secondly, it is easier for PC users to switch to this system than to move to a recent version of the proprietary operating system, explains Cyril Roiron, who heads the Open Standards and Free Software project at theGeneva State Department for Education (Département de l'Instruction Publique, de la Culture et du Sport).

All of Geneva's primary schools, for school children aged 4 to 12, have one PC in a classroom that can be used by teachers and students to access the Internet, send emails, play educational games and run other educational applications. The provided configuration proposes 3 different sessions, based on the target group: one for the 'administrative' work of the teacher, and one for each of the two children's age groups.

Bandwidth
Some secondary schools, for students aged 12 to 15, already have one or two PC labs and currently use a mix of PCs running Ubuntu and two different brands of proprietary operating systems. "Where possible, we'll be phasing out the proprietary systems. For now, one language teaching tool will only work on a proprietary operating system, so we will not be able to get rid of them all."

SEM is focussing entirely on the PCs that are used for teaching. It has been preparing the switch to GNU/Linux foryears. During this time, it has created inventories of PC hardware and the various computer network facility capacities. It has searched for and tested alternatives for all the applications used. The department is making available a detailed http://petit-bazar.unige.ch/guide-utilisation-ubuntu.pdf manual. They also organise teacher trainings, host an online forum for teachers, and are available for teachers to drop by with questions on Wednesday afternoon.

Easier to use
Ubuntu is proving not just easier to maintain, the switch is also emphasising the use of PCs in primary schools, says Roiron. "We've showed them how easy it is to use Ubuntu, and how we can help in several ways, including on-site and remote."

Roiron contacted all schools to offer training and assistance. He visited all of primary schools, often by bike, and met with teachers to discuss their PC needs and taking away their fears and doubts.
Change management

Among the teachers themselves, the biggest resistance is to the change from a proprietary text editor to the LibreOffice text editor. This is highlighting a lot of interoperability issues with documents stored in a mix of proprietary electronic formats, Roiron says. "We recommend that teachers install LibreOffice at home, or if that is not an option, to create PDFs for those documents they need to print at school. But that move is not exactly popular, even though training and support is available."

"Teachers in the secondary schools are required to give an introduction into free software, says Roiron. "However, many teachers don't have the time to increase their knowledge. It would make sense if more teachers were aware of the freedoms that come with free and open source software."

Geneva's primary schools has 32,501 students in the 2012/2013 school year, and another 13,048 students in the compulsory stage of its secondary school cycle.
Hiccups
As in many large ICT projects, Roiron says, switching the Geneva Canton's secondary schools to Ubuntu GNU/Linux experienced a few hiccups. A few teachers lost data during the switch because they did not follow the back-up instructions and copied 'shortcuts to data', instead of the data itself. Some teachers were very keen to use cloud services to manage files, and the Service écoles-médias team wrestled with a wide variety of printers and other PC peripherals. For some the drivers were not fully translated into French, and others limited the available options on printers. "We had many questions on the availability of fonts, and how to scan photos and illustrations."

A Linux distribution for science geeks

Αντιγράφω από το opensource.com

Fedora Scientific is a Linux distribution specifically designed for enabling open science. It is a Fedora spin targeted at users whose work involves scientific and numerical computing. Perhaps like other Fedora spins, it was conceived out of a simple need: the need to avoid constantly installing the same software on a fresh Linux installation.

If you use open source software tools such as GNU Octave, IPython, gnuplot, and libraries such as SciPy and GNU Scientific library in your work—and you write papers and reports in LaTeX—Fedora Scientific is for you. When you install it, you get these and a number of other applications that you may be using to get your scientific work done. The Fedora Scientific guideaims to help you learn about the included software. It features pointers to resources, so you can learn more about them.
Downloading Fedora Scientific

You can download the current Fedora Scientific release (Fedora 20, at the time of this writing) as an ISO file. Both 32-bit and 64-bit images are available, and each is around 3.4 GB in size. You can also create Live USB media with these images. Just follow these instructions. You can also burn the ISO file to a DVD.

If you are not keen on installing Fedora Scientific before trying it out, it's a good idea to use software such as libvirt or VirtualBox to first test it in a virtual machine.
Customising Fedora Scientific

Since Fedora Scientific is essentially a Fedora Linux distribution with a number of additional applications installed, you can install any additional software using the package manager. For example, if you are not a big fan of the KDE Plasma Desktop, you can install GNOME 3 or any of the other desktop environments.
Discussions, support, and getting involved

If you have a suggestion regarding the spin, have a query, or want to report a problem, please join the Fedora scitech mailing list.

As users, you are most enabled to help shape the spin. At this stage, the best way to contribute is to help complete the user guide.
Why should you care?

The reason you are reading an article on Fedora Scientific during Open Source Week is obvious. Outlined here are the benefits of using Fedora Scientific for scientific work. I encourage you to use Fedora Scientific and help make it better. In the process, you will help push forward the beautiful collaboration between science and open source software.

Τα Windows XP τελείωσαν, και τώρα τι;

Why Linux Mint is a worthwhile Windows XP replacement

Replace the Retiring Windows XP with Linux

  1. ubuntu 12.04
  2. mint mate
  3. mint debian
  4. debian
  5. gnew sense
  6. xubuntu
  7. voyager
  8. slitaz

Γιατί Ελεύθερο Λογισμικό / Λογισμικό Ανοιχτού Κώδικά (ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ);
